US doctor Dr. Jumana Nagarwala charged with genital mutilation in court

Dr. Jumana Nagarwala of Northville, a Detroit emergency room doctor was charged in court for mutilating the genitals of two 7-year-old girls. It is the first case prosecuted under a federal law criminalizing the procedure. According to the complaint, the FBI received information that Dr. Nagarwala had performed procedure on the two girls at a clinic, which was not identified by investigators. Dr. Nagarwala does not work at the clinic, according to the complaint, and there is no record of her billing for medical procedures there.
Female genital mutilation is considered as criminal sexual activity.
“According to the complaint, despite her oath to care for her patients, Dr. Nagarwala is alleged to have performed horrifying acts of brutality on the most vulnerable victims,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Blanco, of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The Department of Justice is committed to stopping female genital mutilation in this country, and will use the full power of the law to ensure that no girls suffer such physical and emotional abuse.”
David Olejarz, a Henry Ford spokesman, told the Detroit News that Nagarwala works for the hospital system and has been placed on administrative leave. “The alleged criminal activity did not occur at any Henry Ford facility,” he told the News. “We would never support or condone anything related to this practice.”
