In a meeting with Tobacco Board members and traders here at CM Camp Office, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu set a deadline of 3 weeks to complete the sale of unsold inventory of the crop.
Expressing anguish over the mounting problems of tobacco farmers in the state, the Chief Minister asked traders to buy 10 million kgs of low grade (f9 and f10) crop every week and complete the process within three weeks.
Of the total stock of 36 million kg that is yet to be sold in the next three weeks, around 15. 72 million kg of it is rejected crop. “I will review the sale of inventory every week and the process has to be completed in 3 weeks,” he explained.
In earlier meetings with traders and Tobacco Board members when Union Minister Nirmala Sithraman met the Chief Minister here, it was decided that the inventory had to be sold by September 30th.
However, due to a delay in meeting the deadline, the Chief Minister reacted sternly to the lackadaisical attitude of traders and set a three-week deadline. “By buying stocked up inventory, ensure that farmers are assured of the remunerative price for the crop. During crisis, traders have to be sensitive to the problems of farmers,” the Chief Minister said.
Recalling his earlier meeting with Ms. Sitharaman recently, the Chief Minister said a joint package to bail out farmers was decided as part of which the Central government will bear Rs. 15 (75%) and the state government will bear Rs. 5 (25%) of the total Rs. 20 per kg subsidy that will be given for rejected tobacco crop.
The total cost to the state exchequer for paying the subsidy of Rs. 5 will amount to Rs. 7.86 crore. This, according to the Chief Minister, will be borne by the state to rescue tobacco farmers at the earliest.
“Ensure that this money is credited to their account directly,” he told the Tobacco Board members, adding that he will talk to the Central Government to ensure that this is implemented immediately.
Chief Secretary IYR Krishna Rao, Principal Secretary (Finance) PV Ramesh, Secretary to CM Sai Prasad, Joint Secretary to CM A. Rajamouli, Tobacco Board members and traders were present in the meeting.
